in short

‘Evolve’ is a design for a drill that I made as part of an assignment for the  course ‘Design Visualization’ at TU Delft. This exercise was focused on learning how to communicate a 3D volume in side-view sketches through the understanding of materialization and presentation techniques. Through an in-depth study of materials such a chromium, high-gloss surfaces and matte rubber, I have learned to materialize a design in a convincing and appealing way. Additionally, I learned about the rules of composition, colour balance and many more elements in graphic design to make a professional poster presentation.

ideation

Exploring shapes

In the ideation phase I like to create unpredictable ideas. One of the techniques we used is quick rough marker sketches. This allows you to loosely sketch without getting into too much detail. Here it was the aim to make a lot of sketches and eventually choose a sketch to develop further.

conceptualization

Giving shape to an idea

During the ideation phase I came up with a double handed drill concept. To converge the process I chose three requirements: Precision, versatility & durability. Furthermore, I incorporated the concept of using a sensor in the drill to detect what is in the wall. Since this idea was futuristic, I opted to use a modern style for the design.

development

Making variations

I used digital means to make several variations of the original design. After I was satisfied with the line sketch I materialized the design further in photoshop. Through in-depth study of materials such a chromium, high-gloss surfaces and matte rubber, I have learned how to materialize a design in a convincing and appealing way.

Final sketch & poster

In the final phase, I have gained insight in the rules of composition, colour balance and many more elements in graphic design to make a professional poster presentation. In order to retain the image and feeling of a raw sketch, I created a final hand sketch that I used in the poster design.
